Automatic Temperature Compensation
Reduce Errors, Improve Productivity, Expand Possibilities
The Model 4176 µ-Ohmmeter was engineered for applications where temperature effects cannot be ignored. Because the resistance of materials such as copper, aluminum, and other conductors varies significantly with ambient temperature, uncompensated measurements can lead to misleading results and reduced productivity.
The 4176’s Temperature Compensation Mode (TCM) solves this problem with the Omni-Temperature-Compensator (Omni-TC) sensor. With just one probe, the instrument can be programmed to:
- Compensate for any temperature coefficient
- Reference results to any chosen temperature point (e.g., 20 °C standard)
This feature ensures your measurements are accurate, repeatable, and consistent — regardless of environmental fluctuations.
On-screen, the 4176 displays:
- The compensated resistance value
- The real-time ambient temperature
The non-compensated (raw) value remains available through the instrument’s serial interfaces, providing flexibility for logging, analysis, or system integration.
Hi-Lo Comparator (HLC)
Reduce Human Error and Streamline Testing
The Hi-Lo Limit Resistance Comparator (HLC) mode on the Model 4176 is designed to save time and minimize mistakes caused by manual inspection. Once you define your test limits, the instrument provides immediate pass/fail feedback:
- Visual Indication – Three front-panel LEDs give a clear Go / No-Go result at a glance.
- Audible Alerts – An onboard beeper signals when limits are exceeded, ensuring results are noticed.
- Automation Ready – An optional rear-panel relay closure terminal block enables system integration, including automated batch sorting, counter activation, custom alarms, or process shutdown.
The new 4176 expands the HLC feature beyond simple Min/Max thresholds with the addition of a Nominal ±% Deviation Mode, offering more flexibility for production and quality control environments.
Stored Power-Up Settings
Start Exactly Where You Want, Every Time
The Model 4176 µ-Ohmmeter adds a powerful convenience feature: the ability to save custom power-up settings. Instead of reconfiguring the instrument every time it’s switched on, your preferred setup is instantly restored, saving time and ensuring consistency across measurements.
With a single press of the front-panel Store button, you can define:
- Startup Range – Choose which resistance range the device powers up in.
- Temperature Compensation (TCM) – Set ON or OFF at startup.
- Hi-Lo Comparator (HLC) – Enable or disable by default.
- Peak Mode – Select ON or OFF at power-up.
Changing your defaults is just as simple: update your settings and press Store again, or reset to factory defaults at any time.
This feature ensures that the 4176 is always ready for your workflow, improving productivity and reducing setup errors.
Interlock Current Disable (ICD) Terminals
An Extra Layer of Safety and Control
For applications where safety is critical, the Interlock Current Disable (ICD) option provides an added level of protection. When installed, the rear panel of the 4176 is equipped with a dedicated pair of ICD terminals.
- To enable current output, the terminals must be shorted together.
- When the terminals are open, the current source is automatically disabled.
This feature ensures that test setups can be interlocked with external systems, fixtures, or safety switches, preventing accidental current sourcing during connection, disconnection, or maintenance. The ICD option is ideal for production environments or sensitive applications where operator and device safety is paramount.
Connectivity & Interfaces
Reliable Communication for Modern Systems
The Model 4176 µ-Ohmmeter addresses and eliminates the connectivity issues found in earlier generations. With upgraded electronics and firmware, serial communication is now more stable, consistent, and reliable — ensuring smooth integration into both legacy and modern test setups.
Key interface improvements include:
- RS-232 (Standard): Legacy compatibility for existing systems.
- USB (Standard): Now built in, providing simple plug-and-play operation without the need for adapters.
- Ethernet (Optional): A major new addition, enabling remote access, automation, and integration into networked environments.
Alongside these hardware upgrades, the 4176 introduces an expanded command and query set, offering greater flexibility and control for automated test environments.
With these improvements, the 4176 is no longer limited by past connectivity concerns — it is fully equipped for today’s workflows and tomorrow’s systems.
