Automatic Temperature Compensation

Reduce Errors, Improve Productivity, Expand Possibilities

Resistance changes with temperature. For materials such as copper and aluminum, even modest changes in ambient temperature can produce measurable differences in resistance, making direct comparison between measurements difficult.

The Model 4300E Temperature Compensation Mode (TCM) automatically converts the measured resistance to its equivalent value at a selected reference temperature using the optional Omni-TC temperature sensor.

The 4300E can be programmed with both the material’s temperature coefficient and the desired reference temperature. Built-in configurations provide convenient presets for:

  • Copper at 20 °C or 25 °C

  • Aluminum at 20 °C or 25 °C

  • Gold at 20 °C or 25 °C

  • Custom coefficient and reference-temperature values for other materials

During operation, the 4300E measures both the load resistance and ambient temperature, then automatically calculates and displays the temperature-compensated resistance.

On-screen, the 4300E displays:

  • The temperature-compensated resistance value

  • The measured ambient temperature

The uncompensated resistance value remains available through the instrument’s remote interfaces, providing additional flexibility for data logging, analysis, and automated systems.

Hi-Lo Comparator (HLC)

Reduce Human Error and Streamline Testing

The Hi-Lo Comparator (HLC) mode on the Model 4300E simplifies repetitive production and quality-control testing by automatically comparing each resistance measurement against predefined acceptance limits.

The operator receives immediate feedback from dedicated front-panel indicators:

  • GO — The measured resistance is within the programmed limits.

  • LO — The resistance is below the lower limit.

  • HI — The resistance is above the upper limit.

  • Audible indication provides additional operator feedback when applicable.

The 4300E provides two convenient methods for defining acceptance criteria:

  • Min/Max Mode — Directly enter the lower and upper resistance limits.

  • Nominal ±% Mode — Enter a nominal resistance and the allowable percentage deviation.

For automated applications, an optional rear-panel HLC Relay Terminal provides independent contact closures corresponding to GO, LO, and HI conditions. These outputs can be used for automated batch sorting, counters, alarms, process control, or other external equipment.

Stored Power-Up Settings

Start with your preferred configuration Every Time

The Model 4300E allows the operator to save the preferred instrument configuration so that dedicated test stations can power up ready to work. Instead of manually reconfiguring the meter each time it is switched on, stored settings are automatically restored at startup.

Using the front-panel Store function, the 4300E can retain:

Measurement Range

Timed Test Current — ON or OFF

Temperature Compensation Mode (TCM) — ON or OFF

Hi-Lo Comparator (HLC) — ON or OFF

Peak Hi/Peak Lo Mode — ON or OFF

To change the startup configuration, simply configure the instrument as desired and store the new setup. Factory power-up defaults can also be restored at any time.

Stored power-up settings are particularly useful in production environments, dedicated workstations, and repetitive test applications where consistent instrument configuration helps reduce operator setup time and prevents configuration errors.

Current Enable Terminal (CET)

Extra Control of Test Current

For applications requiring external control or an additional test-current interlock, the Model 4300E is available with the optional Current Enable Terminal (CET).

The CET uses a rear-panel ¼-inch jack to control whether the 4300E is permitted to source test current:

  • CET closed — Test current operation is enabled.

  • CET open — Test current is disabled.

If the CET circuit is open, the 4300E will not allow the test current to turn ON. If the circuit opens while test current is already active, the instrument immediately disables the current output.

The CET can be connected to external safety switches, fixtures, interlocks, or foot controls, making it especially useful in production environments and applications where the test current must be controlled by equipment external to the instrument.

The CET option includes both a user-wirable plug for external control and a bypass plug for normal operation when an external interlock is not required.

Connectivity & Interfaces

Reliable Communication for Modern Automated Test Systems

The Model 4300E combines the proven measurement capabilities of the 4300 Series with a significantly improved communications platform designed for modern automated test environments.

Standard and optional interfaces include:

  • RS-232 (Standard) — Maintains compatibility with existing automated test systems and legacy installations.

  • USB (Standard) — Provides a convenient modern serial connection for PC-based control and data acquisition.

  • Ethernet (Optional) — Enables TCP/IP communication for networked test stations, remote monitoring, data logging, and system integration.

The 4300E uses a consistent command structure across its communication interfaces and introduces an expanded command and query set for direct control of instrument functions and status. Remote capabilities include measurement configuration, test-current control, Timed Test Current operation, temperature compensation, comparator settings, stored setup, display control, and safety/status queries.

Dedicated SEND and LOG functions further simplify data collection. Individual readings can be transmitted on demand, or measurements can be continuously logged at selectable intervals from 50 milliseconds to 1 second.

These improvements make the 4300E easier to integrate into existing systems while providing the functionality needed for new automated and network-connected test platforms.
